The Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies organises a panel discussion with the participation of LAC-EU members

The Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies at KU Leuven –one of LAC-EU’s partners– organises a panel discussion to discuss Latin America-Europe relations. Entitled “Latin America-Europe Relations in Post-Liberal Times: Renewed Partnership or Increased Contestation?”, the event will take place on May 22, 2025, at 18h CET. The discussion will revolve around the contents presented in The Palgrave Handbook of EU–Latin American Relations, edited by José Antonio Sanahuja and Roberto Domínguez.

Latin America-Europe Relations in Post-Liberal Times: Renewed Partnership or Increased Contestation?

The world is entering a turbulent geopolitical phase, marked by the erosion of liberal international leadership and the resurgence of nationalism. Amid this growing uncertainty, the European Union and Latin America navigate complex political and economic challenges. While global instability presents opportunities for closer bi-regional cooperation on trade, climate, and democratic governance, enduring asymmetries, regional fragmentations, and the rise of populist and far-right movements on both sides of the Atlantic challenge their ability to act jointly. Can these shifting political landscapes be navigated to forge a more balanced and strategic partnership? And what does the legacy of interregional cooperation reveal about their capacity to shape global norms today?

The event, which will include presentations in both Spanish and English, will feature José Antonio Sanahuja, editor of the Handbook and member of LAC-EU’s External Advisory Board, and will be chaired by Ana Obando and Joaquín Caprarulo, doctoral candidates of the network.
