November will be a vibrant month for our community, featuring four major international events where our doctoral candidates and partner institutions will take an active role in advancing EU–LAC academic collaboration.

On 17 September, two roundtables on literary networks took place during the LAC–EU Summer School in Barcelona. Open to the public, the sessions featured writers Fernanda García Lao (Argentina), Quinny Martínez (Colombia), Teresa Ruiz Rosas (Peru), Andreia Moroni (Translator and General Coordinator of the Instituto Guimarães Rosa Barcelona) and Eduardo Ruiz Sosa (Writer, Curator of the KM Amèrica Festival, and Editor at Candaya), who reflected on the dynamics of cultural exchange between Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe.

The LAC-EU Summer School 2025, held from 15 to 17 September at the Universitat de Barcelona, brought together leading scholars, policymakers, and doctoral researchers to reflect on the future of relations between the European Union (EU) and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Organized under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network “Understanding Latin American Challenges in the 21st Century (LAC-EU)”, led by IBEI, this event combined academic debate, public dialogue, and doctoral training. The Summer School joined about 20 PhDs, their supervisors and associated partners to the doctoral network.

The MSCA Doctoral Network “Understanding Latin American Challenges in the 21st Century (LAC-EU)” welcomes the attendance of PhD candidates to its summer school: “Reimagining EU and LAC Relations.”

Following a highly successful first network event in York in March 2025, the entire LAC-EU doctoral network will gather for its summer school, titled ‘Reimagining EU and LAC Relations.’ Hosted by the University of Barcelona, this event will span four and a half days. PhD researchers from the network will be joined by representatives from various institutions and other experts in relations between the European Union, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

One of LAC-EU’s partners, the EU-LAC Foundation, has launched a digital consultation on the Bi-Regional Care Pact between Latin America, the Caribbean and the European Union.

Entitled, “A New Transatlantic Momentum? Europe and Latin America on the Road to the EU–CELAC Summit”, this round table aims to explore the state of EU–LAC relations in the run-up to the 2025 EU–CELAC Summit.

On 29 May 2025, the Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI) and Casa Amèrica Catalunya formalised a significant partnership to strengthen cultural and policy ties between Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean (LAC). 

The Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals, coordinator of LAC-EU, invites applications for a Project Manager position for our Doctoral Network. Apply by June 16.

EU-Latin America Academic Synergies (EULAS) is a Jean Monnet Network that focuses on research, innovation, and collaboration between Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

The Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies at KU Leuven –one of LAC-EU’s partners– organises a panel discussion to discuss Latin America-Europe relations.

The VI Congreso Latinoamericano y Caribeño de Ciencias Sociales de FLACSO will take place from 5 to 7 November 2025. Submit your paper or panel by April 30, 2025.

On March 19-21, the doctoral candidates, researchers and experts from the LAC-EU network gathered in York for an intense programme of workshops, talks and cultural activities. 

Throughout two and a half days, the doctoral candidates will immerse themselves in enriching experiences. The programme will also feature two public events.

Through its EU-LAC International Women’s Network, the EU-LAC Foundation (one of LAC-EU’s associated partners) has organised a parallel event to CSW69, together with ODI Europe / Walking the Talk, La Coordinadora de ONGs de Desarrollo, Hivos and UN WOMEN.

We have a wonderful team of doctoral researchers from all over Europe and Latin America, speaking a wide array of languages. Their multiply–rooted and varied backgrounds will certainly enrich the results of our doctoral network.

The conference aims to explore the complexities of the relationship between Latin America and Europe, and to examine how this bi-regional relationship is shaped by the changing global landscape.

One of LAC-EU’s associated partners, the EU-LAC Foundation, has launched together with the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) a call for proposals for a comparative study focusing on the continuities and new nuances of inequalities in Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean.

On the morning of March 22, IBEI hosted a policy roundtable on the relations between the European Union and the Latin American and Caribbean states.

LAC-EU’s project coordinator, Andrea C. Bianculli (IBEI), took part in the satellite event organised by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA)
